Products vs services: what’s the difference?

DoliPlus clearly separates both catalogues:

• A product is a physical item, optionally managed as stock;
• A service is intangible (e.g. consultancy) and isn’t stock-managed;
• Both can be sold, purchased or offered free of charge.

Automatic references

Standardise your references using a template when creating items. The syntax is simple: PREFIX{0000}, where zeros represent the counter’s digit count.

User interface

In practice, we recommend keeping your session’s default settings:

• Use an auto-complete field to select items;
• Display descriptions directly within forms.

Composite, virtual and bundled products

A virtual product is a “parent” item grouping multiple products. Enable this feature in the module configuration.

Concretely, it’s used to define “bundles” or “kits” – letting you manage one item instead of its multiple components.

When added to a document, only the parent product line appears. Meanwhile, component stock levels automatically adjust with the virtual product.

For example, approving a supplier order for a virtual product also increases stock for all its components. Plus, virtual products can themselves contain other virtual products.

Note: This isn’t a manufacturing feature. Components are only deducted when the parent product is consumed, remaining independently available (unlike production scenarios).

Multiple methods help classify your items.

Product categories

First, group items by category. See the Category management chapter.

Form fields

The “Type” field specifies product nature: finished goods, raw materials, semi-finished goods or packaging.

Finished goods are for sale, while semi-finished goods and packaging classify manufacturing components. Confirm sale status using the corresponding field.

Custom fields

Finally, enhance records with your own fields. See the Custom form fields chapter.

Bulk product deletion

To maintain data integrity, products used in quotes or orders can’t be deleted.

First create a category and assign unused products to it (admin rights required). Then, in the category management tab, select “Permanently delete unused products”. Rest assured – DoliPlus checks all dependencies before deletion.

Pricing, images and barcodes

The product and service catalogue is enhanced with numerous features:

• sales and purchase price management;
• photos attached to each item;
• sales and purchase units (UVA);
• primary, secondary and tertiary packaging;
• barcode management;
• product variations;
• eco-participation and eco-contributions.

 

Selling abroad: a multilingual catalogue

Your product and service catalogue can also be translated. Each record includes a Translation tab where you can enter the label, description and notes in as many languages as needed.

When a quote or invoice is generated in a customer’s language, DoliPlus automatically pulls these translated texts. AI-powered assistance even fills in the fields for you with a single click.

Queries and statistics

Finally, DoliPlus offers extensive statistical reports on your catalogue.

You’ll find them in several places:

• in the Home menu;
• in the submenus of the PRODUCTS/SERVICES menu;
• in the STATISTICS menu, particularly the Stock (400) and Products (500) series.
